Hans G. Hornung, C. L. Kelly Johnson Professor of Aeronautics, Emeritus, has received an Honorary Doctorate from the ETH (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich). He was conferred this honor by the Rector of ETH Zurich, Lino Guzzella at a special ceremony in the Hauptgebaeude of the ETH. Professor Hornung was recognized for his outstanding research contributions to gas dynamics of high-speed currents, especially to reflection and stability of shock waves, to the influence of real gas effects and to the laminar-turbulent transition; in addition the prize is meant as an award of his extraordinary ability to be inspiring when passing his knowledge on to his students. Dale Pullin, Theodore von Karman Professor of Aeronautics, and Hans Hornung, C. L. Kelly Johnson Professor of Aeronautics, Emeritus, have been elected as Fellows of the Australasian Fluid Mechanics Society (AFMS). The Fellowships recognize outstanding contributions to fluid mechanics research in Australia and New Zealand. While the AFMS is in its formative years and this is only the second round of elections, the Fellows will represent an increasingly important part of the Society and its activities. The Fellowships will be presented at the Australasian Fluid Mechanics Conference to be held in Launceston, Tasmania, December 3-7, 2012.

The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) has awarded Hans G. Hornung, C. L. Kelly Johnson Professor of Aeronautics, Emeritus, the 2011 AIAA Fluid Dynamics Award. This is the highest and most prestigious award given by the AIAA Fluid Dynamics Technical Committee. This award recognizes Professor Hornung's outstanding career accomplishments, specifically his theoretical and experimental contributions to the transition between normal and Mach reflections, and the nonequlibrium boundary layer transition.
