Deformation and Failure Under Extreme Conditions Enabled by Pulsed Laser Loading

Speaker: Marc Meyers, University of California San Diego
Location: 101 Guggenheim Lab, Lees-Kubota Lecture Hall
The use of high-amplitude pulsed lasers to investigate the response of materials is rapidly growing as the loading, diagnostic, and recovery techniques produce increasingly quantitative and reproducible results. The combination of analysis, molecular dynamics predictions, and experiments are enabling us to probe the materials response at ever higher pressures and strain rates and shorter times.

Three fundamental problems are presented:

(1) Material strength at strain rates higher than 10 7 s-1.
(2) Defect (dislocations/twins/displacive transformations) generation in compression and tension.
(3) Dislocation velocities: transonic and supersonic dislocations.
